Popular Baby Powder Contained Cancer-Causing Asbestos

Talcum powder is made from the mineral talc, which is composed of magnesium, silicon, and oxygen. It is notably used in products like baby powder and several other consumer products. Chances are high that you have either used or are using a cosmetic product containing talc. Talc is used in these products because when it is ground down into powdered form, it absorbs moisture extremely well and smooths friction between surfaces on your skin, keeping skin dry and preventing rashes. In its natural form, some talc contains asbestos. Asbestos is a substance known to cause cancers in and around the lungs when inhaled.

Lawsuits Against J&J

Reuters published an investigative article entitled: “J&J knew for decades that asbestos lurked in its Baby Powder.” The investigation details that despite “facing thousands of lawsuits alleging that its talc caused cancer, J&J insists on the safety and purity of its iconic product. But internal documents examined by Reuters show that the company’s powder was sometimes tainted with carcinogenic asbestos and that J&J kept that information from regulators and the public.”

Mesothelioma (cancer caused by asbestos) had placed 52-year-old Darlene Coker within its deadly grips. She sued the company in 1999 and was forced to drop her lawsuit due to lack of evidence. Twenty years later, the tides have shifted against J&J’s claim of “lack of evidence” as documents linking the powder to asbestos surfaced. The evidence that Coker and her lawyer wished they had during their lawsuit is now emerging in abundance, as J&J has been compelled to share a treasure trove of confidential documents with lawyers for the 11,700 plaintiffs claiming that the company’s talc caused their cancers.
